Dr Dre’s indiscretion during the takeover of Beats by Apple cost him 200 million!

In 2014, Apple bought Beats Music and Beats Electronics with founders Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre, for the tidy sum – at the time – of 3 billion dollars. But by this time, Dr. Dre had shown himself too eager and had disclosed the deal in a video, before its officialization. Apple had also not really appreciated and the case could have fallen through.

Indeed, in his new book After Steve: How Apple Became a Trillion-Dollar Company and Lost Its Soul, Tripp Mickle tells the story of Apple after the death of Steve Jobs, under the era of Tim Cook. In chapter 10, he discusses the behind the scenesbeginning with Apple’s entry into the fledgling segment of music streaming in early 2010. He explains how Tim Cook discovered Beatsbecause he wanted a solution to the company’s failure to enter this segment.

In 2014, many rumors mentioned the sum of 3.2 billion dollars and it seems that this figure was the right one. At least before Dre’s indiscretion, which would have cost him $200 million and could have canceled the sale.

After having intimated to his collaborators the most absolute silence on the contract, Iovine therefore received a call from Puff Daddy warning him of a video posted on Facebook by Tyrese Gibson. The latter showed Dr. Dre prematurely celebrating the dealcalling himself the hip hop’s first billionaire. Of course, Iovine and Dr. Dre were summoned to Apple headquarters and reprimanded by a Tim Cook. disappointed but calm.
