Google Maps launches a new 3D “immersive view” to explore cities

This new feature merges “billions of Street View and aerial images to create a rich digital model of the world,” says Google. “With our new immersive view, you can experience what a neighborhood, landmark, restaurant or popular spot is like and feel like you’re there before you even set foot there,” promises the American firm. According to Google, the immersive view could revolutionize the way we use its mapping software.

To go further, “Immersive view” will also integrate real-time weather conditions. The images will therefore be different if it is sunny, cloudy, raining or snowing. The time will also be taken into account to display the night or day city, depending on the reality.

Interior of restaurants

In a demonstration video, we can thus see the city of London reproduced in 3D. Google also shows the interior of a hotel-restaurant, which allows users to get an idea of the place before even physically going there. For the moment, no date has been communicated for the launch of this new feature. Google promises that it will be “available soon”. Initially, only the cities of Los Angeles, London, New York, San Francisco and Tokyo can be explored. It will take a little longer for “Immersive view” to extend to other cities like Paris.
