Google will integrate automatic AI-powered summarization functions for documents on Google Docs, but also for failed discussions on Google Chat and Google Spaces.
This Wednesday evening, when opening the Google I / O conference, Sundar Pichai, boss of the Mountain View firm, largely highlighted the group’s advances in the field of linguistic understanding. This resulted in particular in the presentation of new augmented reality glasses capable of translating conversations in real time, but also in new features for Google Docs and Google Chat.
Concretely, Google will be able, for long Google Docs documents, to summarize the entire document in just a few sentences. The idea is thus, for the firm, to read the entire document to retain the strong ideas. A good way for people who don’t have time to read the entire text to at least have an idea of the purpose it may have. This summary is generated automatically thanks to Google’s artificial intelligence algorithms, but it will be possible for users to modify this summary if it does not correspond to what the document indicates.
This is not, however, a novelty in itself. Google had already quietly unveiled this new feature of Google Docs last February in a blog post. The novelty lies above all in the extension of this summary functionality beyond Google Docs. On the occasion of the opening of the Google I/O conference, the firm indicated that the summaries would also be available soon in Google Chat and Google Spaces. As a reminder, this is the instant chat service dedicated to businesses, a competitor to Microsoft Teams or Slack.
A function still limited to Google Docs, Google Chat and Google Spaces
Users will be able to see at a glance a summary of the conversation that took place, without having to catch up on all the exchanges.
For now, these are the only two solutions from Google to offer summaries. Nevertheless, we can imagine in the future an integration of this functionality in other tools of the firm like Gmail – for emails that are often too long.
If Google has already announced the gradual deployment of this automatic summary function in Google Docs in the coming months and everywhere in the world – the function is already available in France, but only with summaries entered by hand – we does not yet know when it will be offered on Google Spaces and Google Chat.
