Porsche Integrates Wireless CarPlay, Apple Music, Apple Podcasts and Android Auto in New PCM 6.0 Update

No summer holidays for Porsche, which will launch the sixth generation of the in-house Porsche Communication Management (PCM) infotainment system. This update will include Apple Music, Apple Podcasts, Wireless CarPlay and Android Auto.

While some will bask in the sun this summer, others will continue to work for the well-being of the former. This is the case of Porsche which will launch the sixth generation of its infotainment system, the Porsche Communication Management (PCM).

The biggest novelty of this PCM 6.0 lies in the integration of Android Auto, which finally becomes automatically accessible as soon as the smartphone is connected to the vehicle via the USB port. On the other hand, it will still be necessary to wait for the wireless mode. Remember that the integration of Android Auto was announced in June 2021 with the Porsche Taycan, the brand’s first electric car (or rather GT) and the first to be equipped with PCM 6.0.

This update, which will now be done remotely, or Over The Air (OTA) in English, will concern the new Porsche 911, Cayenne and Panamera.

Still about Android Auto, Porsche specifies that “telephone functions and smartphone apps that do not affect driving safety can then be operated via PCM 6.0”.

In addition to Android Auto, the PCM 6.0 will integrate Apple Music, requiring a subscription to Apple, but access to the library will be through a free internet connection for three years. In addition, Porsche customers will be able to listen to Apple Podcasts. To facilitate access to the Apple universe, they will also have the possibility “associate their Apple ID with their vehicle in the Porsche Connect app or online at My Porsche”.

Finally, CarPlay in wireless mode will be the standard with PCM 6.0. A quick note about the Voice Pilot voice assistant which is activated by speaking “Hey Porsche”. This becomes more conversational and allows you to operate certain car-related settings, such as the triggering of the massaging seats or the ambient light in addition to the traditional controls.

The particularity of Voice Pilot (and other voice assistants signed Cerence) is to be permanently online, allowing him to learn new phrases.

In reality, the PCM 6.0 is only the transposition of the functions of the Taycan to the thermal models of the Stuttgart brand. This means that 911, Cayenne and Panamera drivers will access their smartphone calendar from the car’s touchscreen and be able to “participate in conference calls using the calendar service”. Everything will be managed via the Porsche Connect app.

Last feature, the new Soundtrack My Life home app. Still in beta phase, it not only allows you to compile a playlist, but also to create a soundtrack in real time that adapts to your type of driving at the time. This is reminiscent of some video games whose music varies according to your progress.

It remains to be seen whether the PCM 6.0 will be able to take into account the new CarPlay functionalities announced by Apple on Monday June 6, 2022. Among these, the possibility of interacting with the instrument cluster.
