DSG is based on the measurement of local electrical conductivity of tissues in real time and without X-rays, with a sensor placed at the tip of the drilling tool. Its effectiveness is proven by more than 85,000 surgeries worldwide and 19 scientific publications. Since 2017, SpineGuard has been collaborating with ISIR (Institute of Intelligent Systems and Robotics) of Sorbonne University, CNRS and INSERM, to apply DSG to surgical robots to improve their safety, precision and autonomy.
CRAS (Conference on New Technologies for Computer and Robot Assisted Surgery), created in 2011, has become one of the most recognized scientific conferences in Europe and worldwide in the field of robotic surgery. Its objectives, in a context where many technologies applicable to robotics are slow to make their way to operating theaters, are to strengthen collaboration between research groups, improve efficiency and reduce development times until when placing on the market.
Three different papers were presented at the CRAS conference:
1. The first, presented in plenary session, is the result of collaboration between ISIR, Hôpital Trousseau in Paris and SpineGuard. Entitled “Toward automatic bone breach detection for spine surgery using tissue bio-electrical conductivity sensing”it presents the results of the first intraoperative data collection of DSG electrical conductivity of tissues during pedicle piercings in a series of patients with scoliosis.
2. The second, presented as a poster and entitled “Automatic bone breach detection for spine surgery based on bio-electrical conductivity sensing: Ex-vivo experimental validationpresents the results of the detection of the bone breach and the automatic stoppage of a vertebral drilling performed by a robot.
3. The third, also in poster form, titled “Force control of the KUKA LBR Med without external force sensor” focuses on a specific servo that allows the robot to optimize the use of DSG to detect the breach, and to follow the respiratory movement of the patient during the drilling.
These two posters and the algorithms described are the fruit of the collaboration between SpineGuard and ISIR.
