By launching his company Ground Control, Jack Sweeney, a 19-year-old American, intended to track the movements of the leaders of large companies. In his line of sight in particular: Jeff Bezos, the boss of Amazon, Bill Gates, at the head of Microsoft, but also Elon Musk. Last November, the freshman at the University of Florida was noticed by the boss of Tesla, because he tracked all the trips of the private jet of the billionaire.
And the young man decided to do it again, as spotted by Bloomberg. Via the “Russian Oligarch Jets” Twitter account, Jack Sweeney is now working to track the movements of all Russian oligarchs. In a context of the invasion of Ukraine by Russia, the movements of these wealthy businessmen, some of whom are close to Vladimir Putin, are closely scrutinized.
On this Twitter account, we can thus follow the movements of the helicopters, private jets and commercial planes of several Russian personalities including Roman Abramovich, owner of the Chelsea football club or the steel magnate Alexandre Abramov.
To collect this information, Jack Sweeney uses programs capable of cross-referencing public data from government agencies with that of the ADS-B Exchange, which makes it possible to monitor air traffic in real time. As Bloomberg points out, the Russian oligarchs are not necessarily on board the aircraft located by the “Russian Oligarch Jets” account. Many of them owning several planes.
