The Google Pixel’s Battery widget got some new display options in the latest Android 13 beta, but it looks like smartphones running Android 12 will finally be the first to take advantage of it.
It’s not every day that a feature intended for the next version of Android ends up arriving on the previous version first. As noticed by 9to5Google, Android 13 Beta 3 brings new functionality to the Battery widget on Pixel smartphones. But surprise, you won’t have to wait for the Android 13 update to take advantage of it since an update to the Android 12 settings is being deployed and allows you to take advantage of this novelty.
New widget formats and compatibility with WearOS
The new Google Play Services settings version 188.8.131.522445739.sr now allows Pixels running Android 12 to be able to shrink the battery widget to an even smaller size than before. New layouts are available such as the possibility to align up to 3 elements horizontally if you wish, with for example your phone, your left earphone and your right earphone. Percentage bars now resize to fill available space in the widget when previously they just left empty space. The icon representing the Pixel Buds has also been revised and looks much more like the brand’s headphones.
This update also gives a new line to the widget called ” Other devices » (Other devices) which shows which other gadgets are connected via Bluetooth to the phone. This includes the company’s Fitbit watches, but also all devices running WearOS. Their battery level is however not indicated on the widget, but it still offers faster access to the list of connected devices in the settings than if you had to access it from the quick settings pane.
